Detail              :  Bound Cleveland for Kingston, she went missing in a summer storm.  She left the Welland Canal the 12th and never arrived at Kingston. The vessel was built by Dr.John  Rae for arctic exploration purposes [she was supposedly exceedingly strongly built] and was supposed to be used on the lakes for the balance of the season, then sailed to England where she would be prepared for her arctic voyage in the spring of 1858. She was slated to look for remains of the  ill-fated Franklin Arctic Expedition, with  which Rae had been associated. She lasted slightly more than a month. Some of her wreckage drifted ashore in September.

Detail              :  She was wrecked on Catawba, then stripped of her engines and gear. She was towed away and abandoned, but later washed back ashore on Catawba.

In July, 1900, the little steamer was struck by a squall and was not powerful enough to oppose the winds. As she dragged ashore, her crew was rescued by the Marblehead Lifesaving crew and the tug MONK.

Detail              : She foundered in a gale. Two crewmen clambered up to the tip of her tall mast as she went down and clung there for 12 hours. In what must be one of the great feats of shiphandling of all time, the skipper of the bulker MARIPOSA brought his big ship right up to the wooden mast and plucked them off in mountinous waves. Owned by Western Transit Co. Master: Capt. Alexander Gillies(d) - his body came ashore near Port Maitland 355 days later.

She had just come out October 22, after having been out of commision for several years.

Ashore at 14-mile Point, near Ontonagon, Mich and expected to become a total loss, June 8, 1890.

Detail              :  The large yacht of millionaire fleet owner James Corrigan was caught in a squall with her sails out full and capsized. The six drowned passengers consisted of Capt. Corrigan’s wife, his 3 daughters, a neice and an infant grandchild. The captain of the yacht was later arrested for manslaughter in mishandling the vessel. All but one of the drowned were in the cabin. All of the crew and one passenger survived. Master: Capt. Chas. J. Holmes. The yacht was  recovered soon after. Owner Corrigan subsequently equipped a scow with a glass bottom and strong electric lights with which to search the bottom in the area for his daughters’ bodies.

Rebuilt 1873, 1876 and 1890. Came to the lakes in 1879.

The yacht once competed in the America’s Cup race {1870}.

Detail              : Bound Cleveland for Detroit, she was struck by a heavy squall and began leaking. Her crew worked the pumps while the vessel was run for shore. She sank five miles short, crew abandoning in her yawl.

Reportedly the oldest working vessel on the lakes at the time.

Also wrecked on Lake Erie in 1851.

Detail              : Bound Detroit for Buffalo, she was rammed by the big package freighter DEAN RICHMOND and sank quickly in a passing error. RICHMOND ran full ahead and pushed her into 15 feet of water as she was going down. Passing error was blamed. At first it was thought that she could be recovered, but she broke up in July. Machinery and cargo were later salvaged by the wrecking tug MAGNET. Master: Capt. T. Fupell. Owned by the Buffalo and Detroit Navigation Line.

Stranded and thought a total loss of N. Fox Island, L. Michigan, late Nov., 1851.

Detail              :  She was not able to maintain steam in a terrific storm, reportedly due to a bunker full of inferior quality coal. She became unmanageable and finally foundered, overwhelmed by the storm. Her crew made it to shore in her smallboats. Reportedly owned by Ives, Windsor, Ont., but still shows on US lists. Master: Capt. Ives.

She was built for Oliver Newberry of Detroit as a sidewheeler. Eventually she was stripped of her engine and abandoned near Springwells, but was raised about 1863 and re-engined as a propeller.

Detail              : Tow of the prop IRON CITY, she broke loose in s torm, drove ashore and was wrecked.  Owned by M. B. Kean of Detroit and home ported out of Marine City.

As a passenger steamer, she struck a reef off Eagle River, Michigan, Lake Superior, and quickly sank in July of 1864. Thought to be a total loss, but was recovered easily a week later.  Her passengers, crew and freight were rescued by the steamer CLEVELAND.

Built as a sidewheeler, converted to a steambarge in 1863 at the Stupinsky yard, Detroit, and may have been converted to an unpowered barge in 1868 or 9 after wrecking at Marine City.
