Detail              : Struck by a gale, she broke away from her winter moorings and drifted out into the lake. A change of wind then drove her back on shore near where she started. She was salvagable at first, but she broke up in heavy waves the 16th while salvagers were enroute. Registered out of Winnipeg, Alta.

Detail              : She collided with the steamer PILGRIM at night in a passing error while bound Holland for Chicago. The passengers and  crew of KALAMAZOO boarded PILGRIM, which took the former in tow. While the pumps worked to keep her afloat, the boat slowly sank, finally going down while still well out in the lake, 6 hrs after the collision. The wreck occurred in foggy conditions. The PILGRIM, which was found to be at fault in the collision, was turned over to the owners of the KALAMAZOO as payment for the loss. Master: Capt. Cummings. Owner: Griffiths, Henry, Cummings and Nees, Saugatuck.

Detail              : Went missing in the "Great Gale of 1905." A "ghost ship", it is said that she can be seen slipping through the fog around Thunder Bay and that her whistle can be heard blowing distress signals above the breakers on stormy nights - signals that will never be answered. Some bodies later recovered showed that at least part of  the crew had abandoned ship. Owned by St. Clair Steamship Co. (J.H. Sheadle, prop.). Master: Capt. F. L. Tomkin(d).

Detail              : Went missing in tremendous gale, probably capsized from the weight of ice in her superstructure.  Little information or wreckage was found until the wreck  was discovered in 1977 in 175-280' of water. She has claimed at least one diver since. Bound Montreal for Ft. William.

Bodies of part of her crew were found on Amygdaloid I. the next spring, sitting around a fire site. They had been chewed, apparently by wolves.

Detail              :  She was blown ashore in a gale, stranding about 7 miles south of Manistique. Being quite advanced in age and lying in an exposed position on a rocky bottom, she was left to break up in place. Master and owner: Capt. Peter Blake.

In October of 1901 Capt. Blake and a 16-year old boy sailed her 500 miles through rugged fall weather after her crew went on strike.

She went ashore on the S side of Pilot Island in late May of 1896, later slipped off  into deeper water. Stripped and abandoned June 2, she was declared a ttoal loss and abandoned to her underwriters, but was later recovered by Leathem and Smith Towing & Wrecking. She had come back into the hands of Capt. Blake by 1901

Detail              : Rammed and sunk by the sidewheel passenger steamer CITY OF DETROIT II, which had nearly 1,000 excursionists aboard, when the latter's steering gear broke. Though she sank quickly with the steamer resting right on top of her, the steward's mother, who was a passenger taking the trip for her health,  was the only casualty.  Master: Capt. F. A. Fisk. Owner: Webb & Goulder, et. al, Cleveland. KASOTA was a serious obstruction in the Detroit R. until being raised in September of 1891 by tying 134 wooden casks to her and filling them with air. Rebuilt as above.

Detail              : She became disabled and foundered in a storm about 3 am while outbound from Ashtabula. The passenger steamer CITY OF ERIE happened upon the scene just as she was going down. With the help of the steamer's big searchlight,  the schooner's crew was able to make its way to her in the yawl boat. Her masts and rigging were later found floating 6 mi N of Ashtabula, OH, but the exact position of the hull [given as "about 50 miles W of Cleveland] was never determined. Owned by Capt. J. C. Miller, Marine City.

Also foundered on L. Huron, 1885.

Broke her back in a stranding on the Detroit R. in Sep, 1877. Sunk at Port Colborne, Ont., in July, 1885.

Detail              :  Tow of the tug LEATHAM SMITH, she had just accidentally dumped her cargo off Ludington as the result of a gale when she foundered. Her two crewmen were saved from the violent lake when one of them was able to attract the tug's attention by whistling. Owner: Thomas H. Smith, Sturgeon Bay. The hulk was later seen floating with her decks awash and was searched for by the cutter TUSCARORA, which later found and towed her to Muskegon, but she was never returned to service. The carferry PERE MARQUETTE 18(qv) foundered nearby in the same storm.

Beached and abandoned near Chicago about 1898, but drifted out into the lakes by herself and became a serious hazard to shipping. She was given a major rebuild at Sturgeon Bay, Wis. after being recovered by the tug MORFORD.

Damaged in a boiler explosion at Sheboygan in June of 1860. As many as nine lives were lost.

Detail              : She was driven down and foundered in a gale while bound Ashland, Wis., for Lake Erie. Her crew was rescued with difficulty just before she went down, by her tow steamer J.C. GILCHRIST, which pulled up alongside in the gale and passed the crew and rhe captain’s two children over on ropes. Master: Capt. Sullivan. Owner: J. C. Gilchrist, Cleveland. Newspapers later said the fact that she was grossly overloaded was the reason for her loss.

Detail              : Wrecked by a northerly storm blowing through the mouth of  the harbor, she was driven broadside on the beach. Later recovered, though she had been declared a total loss. She sprang a leak and sank in Sandusky harbor due to age, 1906, and was abandoned. Capt. George Ritchie sailed  her for her last 25 years of existance.

Run down and heavily damaged by the steamer NEW ORLEANS the previous August - thought to be unrepairable, but soon put back into service at Tonawanda.

Tow of steamer J.E. POTTS, she collided with the barge JOHN MARTIN, in tow of the steamer CITY OF CLEVELAND, and sank, in Neebish Rapids, [St. Mary’s R. near “Rain’s Dock”] Jun 17, 1889.

Detail        :  She was in tow of the tug MYSTIC, when the little steamer broke down in the middle of the lake. The barge and her two crewmen were cut loose, and the vessel drifted away. The tug was towed into port and the barge was found four days later on the beach at 14-mile Point, Keweenaw, more than 90 miles from where she had been cut loose. No word on her crewmen. Detail              : Driven ashore and destroyed by a gale, she had been lost from the tow of the steamer W.L. WETMORE(qv), which had been towing the barge BRUNETTE as well. The three were trying to make the harbor at Tobermory when all went ashore. The crew, after a frigid, harrowing night, were rescued by the fish tug GLUCUS.

Registered out of Saginaw for her entire 34-year career.

Hailed from Chicago, but owned by Forbes and Wheeler, Port Huron. Master: Capt. Dunbar.

There accusations at the time that both steamer and barge were overloaded. Owned by Northwestern Transportation Co. Master: Capt. David Girardin, Jr. (d).

Largest composite vessel ever built on the lakes, she was also the first lakes freighter to be equipped with electric lights.
