Detail              : She was unloading sand at a dock when she was rammed by the freighter JOHN W. GATES and sank. Her enrollment was surrendered at Detroit Mar 25, 1912. She was raised in 1914 and towed to Marine City, where the McLouth Shipyard planned to turn her into a drydock. Plans never materialized, however,  and she sat there until scrapped in 1923.

Driven ashore by a 100 mph gale on Lake Superior in 1896. Recovery and rebuilding cost $50,000.

Detail              : She missed the south pier and went ashore, where she was pounded to pieces by the 17th. The single casualty was her skipper. The rest of the crew - except for the cook, who swam ashore - were saved by the tugs J.J. HAGERMAN and J. B. MERRILL and the revenue cutter ANDREW JACKSON. She had been bound Milwaukee for Buffalo. Master: Capt. Howard(d).

Detail              : She was bound downriver with a full complement of passengers when she hit a floating object and began to sink. Her quick-thinking skipper ran her to a dock on the Canadian side,  where her passengers disembarked without incident. The famous TASHMOO settled at the dock and later was declared a constructive total loss.

She lost to the passenger steamer CITY OF ERIE in an exciting "Great Steamboat Race" in 1900.

Detail              : Tow of the steamer BULGARIA(qv) in a gale, she dropped off a big wave and struck bottom. She began to sink, then foundered quickly when her towline was cut. Bound Escanaba for Cleveland. Member of Corrigan Flt. Master: Capt. William Radford(d).

She was one of the largest vessels on the lakes when built.

Converted to schooner-barge before 1894.

Sunk in a collision with the steamer J. H. WADE in the St. Mary's River in August of 1890 and raised late in September.

Souvenir hunters who had removed her anchor were forced to return it in 1989.

There were numerous salvage attempts between the date of her loss and summer of the following year.

She parted her cables and went high on the beach under Eagle Harbor Bluffs,  Lake Superior, in early December, 1876. She was recovered by the tug WELCOME the following March.

Detail              :  After missing her stays while trying to shelter from a gale, she dropped anchor, but stranded and wrecked anyway.  Her crew made it to shore on Cove Island in a makeshift raft after her yawl had washed away, then took the closed lighthouse's yawl and rowed 9 miles to the mainland. The wrecking tug ERIE BELLE was later dispatched to assist her by her insurance company, but was recalled shortly after. She finally went to pieces the following summer.Reg out of Goderich, owned by E.J. Peters of Windsor, who also sailed her

The steamer took her in tow, but after awhile the tug’s crew signaled wildly that she was sinking. The GERMANIC rounded two to pick up her crew, but the tug sank before all could be rescued. The skipper, his sister and a passenger drowned. Owned by W. J. Berry, Providence Bay, Ont. Master: Capt. John Wylie (d).

John Cornwall of Port Huron.  Raised Aug 12th, but it's not known what happened to her after that. Salvagers said her hull was perfectly sound and she must have shipped seas from above.

Rebuilt from a prop to schooner at Grand Haven, MI,  in 1880, after sinking there,  but given engine from old prop AKRON (US#394) in 1881. Also rebuilt in 1884.

At least two died when her boiler exploded as she was trying to release herself from the Carrollton Bar on the first trip, Jun, 1875. Capsized and sank in the harbor of Charlevoix, Mich in June of 1901 when she was misloaded with a heavy deck cargo of lumber.

Despite the efforts of her crew she began to founder and the crew plus the captain and his wife escaped in the smallboat. They spent more than thirty hours adrift until the boat finally came ashore west of Whitby, Ont., with the occupants badly frozen, but still alive. Out of Oswego, sailed by Capt. Malone and  owned by his wife, Mrs. Malone.

Early in May of the same year she was struck by a gale when off Port Weller. She ran for the shelter of Presqu'ile, but was not able to wear in to the harbor.  She dropped anchors, but the cable soon parted and she went into shallow water. Bound Oswego for Toronto.

Detail              : This schooner tacked in front of the propeller MILWAUKEE and was rammed near the bow. Her crew tried to run the wrecked schooner to Skillagallee, but she sank first. The crew scrambled up the mast, but half were lost. MILWAUKEE (qv) also sank. The survivors of both vessels were picked up by the prop FREE STATE, which witnessed the accident. She had been bound Oswego for Chicago. Most of her cargo was later salvaged [1874].

Detail              :  Bound Montreal for lake Erie,  she caught fire and burned to a total loss only two miles from the beach. All of the women and children on the boat and most of the crew lowered her lifeboat while the vessel was still running ahead, and all were drowned when the boat immediately capsized. The survivors went into the water and were picked up by a boat from shore and the schooner MARY ADELAIDE. The hulk drifted to Cedar Island, where it burned out. She was a $35,000 loss. A newspaper stated that she had no good lifeboat aboard, and it later turned out that her skipper had sold 2 of her 3 lifeboats just prior to thew fateful trip. Her machinery was later recovered and installed in the prop AVON(qv). Out of Sorel, Que. Master: Capt. Patrick Campbell(d).

On her first trip from Chicago to Oswego she arrived after 8 days and 4 hours, the fastest passage up to the that time by a sail vessel. The next day the record was broken by 6 hours by the schooner SURPRISE.

Detail              : She tried cutacross the bows of the Canadian sidewheeler KINGSTON, and rammed the larger vessel and sunk. She went down near the harbor entrance, where her crew and passengers were rescued from shore - some by the Lifesaving Service and the KINGSTON,  and many others by local boats. The captain and some of the five crewmen jumped to the KINGSTON as she struck, leaving the passengers to their own devices. Owned by Fixx Bros. of Charlotte and used in the excursion business from Charlotte to Seabreeze, NY. Master: Capt. Patrick Thorpe. The hull was later raised and towed into the Genesee River, where it was abandoned in a swamp south of the harbor.

Converted from a yacht, tug and packet to this excursion vessel in 1877 by H. Jewett of Buffalo.
